What Is α?
The fine structure constant is a dimensionless number—it has no units. It measures the probability that an electron will emit or absorb a photon. Z₉ Theory: An Algebraic Derivation
Z₉ Theory takes a fundamentally different approach. The equation 2n² − 3n + 2 = 137 selects n = 9 as its unique positive integer solution. This is not arbitrary—the discriminant of this quadratic (9 + 8 × 137 = 1105) factors in a way that uniquely determines the cyclic group Z₉.
The fine structure constant then emerges as a derived quantity from the representation theory of Z₉ acting on the Standard Model gauge groups. The theoretical value matches experiment to the precision currently available.
